Unpleasant smells come out of the bathroom once the shower drains get clogged. These odors are usually caused by decomposing hair, grease from soap and other tiny particles. You need not call a plumber right away. DIY techniques can solve the problem immediately. Besides, it may not be necessary to use chemicals because these substances are often toxic and unsafe for human beings.
Get basic tools such as the drain snake. It is difficult to clean a clogged shower duct without this handy device. It can glide easily through the tub culvert which normally has a two-inch diameter. Make sure that it is only the shower drain that is affected before you start working. You may have to call a plumbing expert if the problem is caused by blocked pipes.
Take off the grate on top of the drain. Remove any fragments that may be wedged on the cover or the drain's opening. Put in the snake. Your options are the hand crank variety or power top which comes with a ¼ inch wire. The snake can clear any stoppage up to 10 feet. Allow the water to run and see if the object has been removed. Replace the grate if the drain functions normally again.
It is also advisable to use homemade solutions or plain hot water if the drain is only partly jammed. Pour the water straight into the drainpipe. Opt for the kettle because it is easier for pouring and reduces the risks of accidents. Allow15 minutes to pass before using the bathroom plunger. A lot of plumbers do not recommend the use of using boiling water because this can dissolve any sealing substances, wax or rubber gaskets used as plumbing fittings.
Baking soda is an effective substance when mixed with vinegar. All you have to do is empty one cup of this solution into the drain followed by pouring a huge container of boiling water down the shower drain. Toss down another kettle just to make sure before allowing cold tap water to run for a few minutes. Another alternative is to dispense one cup of cooking vinegar. Cover for at least 30 minutes before unclogging. Pour a pail of boiling water and let this remain for one hour to remove the congestion completely.
Still, some homeowners prefer to buy a chemical drainage cleaner. There are directions on the package that can be easy to follow. Just make sure to wear thick gloves as protection and open the bathroom window so you do not get affected by the acerbic vapor and scent.
